EX118 Contemplate Space

There are actually a few different exercises this week. Only one requires the use of a camera.

exercise one

Find a space that you are comfortable in, with lots of visual variety.

Choose a spot you can stand safely in for a while. Somewhere you can stand still and without distractions.

Stand still there. Try and settle your mind.

Do a full 360 degree rotation, slowly. Go so slowly that this full rotation takes at least a minute. Just look out at eye level.

Try not to read signs or think about the meaning of what you are seeing.

What was that like?

exercise two

Find a a different space that you are comfortable in, with lots of visual variety.

Choose a spot you can stand safely in for a while. Somewhere you can stand still and without distractions.

Stand still there. Try and settle your mind. Relax. Do some gentle breathing exercises.

When you are feeling ready. Close your eyes. Keep them closed.

Notice the sounds, and your body and its sensations. Feel your breaths.

After a minute or so, rotate your body 180 degrees and open your eyes suddenly. Open them wide and let awareness meet what ever it meets. Notice what happens in the first instance in your mind, and then what happens afterwards. After few seconds close your eyes again.

Relax yourself again. Breathe

Rotate yourself a quarter of a turn, and tilt your head down. Open your eyes again and repeat that noticing of your thoughts.

Repeat this for five minutes, each time turning and looking somewhere different. No need to plan where, random is good.

What did you notice? What was it like?

exercise three

Contemplate space

Find some space to photograph. I can just see some of you rolling your eyes. If that is you perhaps you can frame this as negative space.

Photograph the space between things. Photograph space.

This weeks exercise is left suitably vague so that you have plenty of room for interpretation.
