EX 169 portrait or landscape orientation

For this exercise we are going to explore a traditional photographic print on 8 x 10 inch paper. This was the most common sized print. We often cropped down our 2 x 3 aspect ratio works to fit on the 4 x 5 ratio.

For this exercise we are going to work in a this aspect ratio exclusively. Many of you will be able to set this into oyour cameras, but others will need to shoot wide and crop down to 8 x 10 later.

We are going to explore the same subject, and intentionally photograph it in the vertical, and then intentionally photograph it in the horizontal.

Then we will post both to compare the two orientations.

To do this exercise properly, you need to use your feet, and compositional skills to photograph your subject in one orientation, then change and rephotograph your subject the other way.

If you think you can just re crop the same image in different formats, you have missed the point of the exercise.

This is about looking and seeing the subject differently and working out ways to communicate your feelings about it taking seperate photographs using the different views.

Post 3 subjects, and the two images of the same subject, both vertically and horizontally.

Post your photographs in this post https://lensclub.discussion.community/post/ex-169-portrait-or-landscape-orientation-12593399?pid=1334770960#post1334770960

We will discuss these in Len’s Class on the 4th April 2023 at nine thirty am Sydney time.
