EX136 including the self

We are about to explore the notion that photographs can be seen on a spectrum somewhere between being mirrors or windows. An idea that is explored by John Szarkowski in a mono exhibition with the same name in 1978. There is a strong connection here with Minnor White, whom I expect first proposed the idea.

This idea will need some explanation and exploration to see how relevant it is today for us as artists.

For our first exercise playing with this notion I ask that you include yourself physically in a photograph and share it with the group. It is such a lovely way to start the year with a self portrait. A clear indication of an image that is definitely a mirror.

You only have to include a small proportion of yourself in the image, or you may wish to go all out and do a self portrait.

What is important is that you are exploring who you are in the photograph or photographs you take.

Please discuss the various meanings of the images in the discussion. We won’t be discussing this exercise in Len’s Class next week. And it will just be the start of exploring this idea of Windows and Mirrors. I will do a presentation on the subject as we explore these ideas.
