EX176 Multiple Exposures with Blend Modes

Blending two or more photographs together is a fun way to abstract a photograph. You can even blend a photograph with itself by making a duplicate layer and playing with blend modes. Many people in the abstract group used this as a way to modify and abstract colours in their work.

If you are in photoshop or affinity photo you have multiple blend modes at your disposal. Here is a list of all the ones in photoshop and what they do. https://helpx.adobe.com/au/photoshop/using/blending-modes.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0ykC3ipi3SSCEdJgMnc9gUa6nKVVZmr2DKNb7r1UQSYvE3YS9ZHjVQaAhGREALw_wcB&sdid=B16P3SWD&mv=search&ef_id=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0ykC3ipi3SSCEdJgMnc9gUa6nKVVZmr2DKNb7r1UQSYvE3YS9ZHjVQaAhGREALw_wcB:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!3085!3!647667183572!e!!g!!blend%20modes%20explained!19660894054!145350484305&gad=1

Some cameras have blend modes in them with multiple exposures. These include many Canon, Nikon and Fuji cameras. The most common of these is average, multiply, lighten and darken. Each priorities the way the two photographs interact.

For someone who hasn’t used layers before the easiest way to start is using a phone app. My go to for blend modes is photosplit. It has a multiple exposure function, and has many blend modes available. See the screen shots bellow.

For this weeks exercise lets play with blend modes and see what we can learn from each other. You may start with something simple like the photosplit app or with photoshop or affinity photo. Please describe what you have done.

Blend modes would be very helpful for those of you adding text to photographs.

Post up to five images where you show and describe your experiments with blend modes. As we discuss the results we will learn how others did their blending modes and learn more about how to do them. We can then take this further the week after.

Remember to experiment and have fun. Post our photographs here.

We will discuss these on Tuesday 13th June 2023 at 9.30 Sydney time.
