EX94 Processing for congruence

In the recent composition presentation I talked about photographs being congruent. The concept is that the centre of attention matches visually with the intellectual / emotional center. This may of course be in multiple places in your photograph. For many photographs have more than one point of interest.

In a previous exercise we concentrated on matching the center of interest with the point of greatest contrast. If you haven’t played with this exercise yet, I suggest you do it first or even as part of this exercise.

In this weeks exercise I would like you take one at least one photograph and follow the following steps.

  1. Print it out if possible and put it up so you can see it. Even bw print from you cheapest printer will do.

  2. Contemplate your photograph over time

  3. Make notes about what is capturing your attention and what interests you about it.

  4. Contemplate how you can increase that idea, message or feeling with some more processing

  5. Write out a considered list of processing improvements

  6. Keep looking at it regularly, this is not a quick exercise, over a few days if possible, or even weeks

  7. Finally, go and process it to your list trying to bring the visual attention to the things that inspire and work with you in the photograph.

  8. Post both, the before and after.

Sometimes it is the really subtle things that make a difference. The changes you make might be small, or they might be huge. It doesn’t matter what you change. What matters is that you are bringing the photograph to a higher level with consideration.

Your goal is a photograph that is more congruent than when you started.

You are aiming for RESOLUTION. That is is now ready to show the world what have done. Ok, so perhaps not the world, lets just say the others here in Len’s Club.

Please post you photographs in our forum
