EX93 Focus on where you Focus

In this weeks exercise we want to play with where the emotional and intellectual focus of a photograph is matched clearly with the area of sharpest focus in the photograph. To do this you will need to make sure you use your widest aperture on your fastest lens.

Try creating photographs with this fast lens, wide open and match the center of interest with the centre of focus. To make it the center of interest consider the following issues:

  • Area of greatest tonal contrast

  • Sharpest spot

  • Where in the photograph you place this centre of interest

  • Colour contrast

  • Textural contrast

  • Centre of intellectual interest

  • Bokeh quality

  • Getting in close to the subject amplifies the our of focus areas

  • Background

Try three different subjects. And see if you can post three different photographs in our forum showing where and how you have played with this idea of keeping the center of focus matching the focus of your photograph.

We will discuss this next Friday, and we will talk about the photographs posted in the forum.

Spring is slowly ending here in the Southern Hemisphere, so you will have to excuse me with my examples being of flowers. For those of you just heading into winter, may they brighten your day.
