EX27 Calming horizontals
Big open horizons ground the viewer and make them feel calmer. This continues through to horizontal lines in your photographs as well.
You can clearly see this in long seascape panoramas. Particularly when they are bathed in warm sunset colours. Water is also calming for the majority of people. This becomes a winning combination with a wider public.
Horizontal lines calm the viewer and ground them.
As I write this I am on the Spirit of Tasmania about to set sail on the overnight trip to Tasmania. When people get sea sick they often go out onto the deck and look at the horizon. This helps ground us. We can then see the motion that is messing with our inner ear where there is a bone that floats to help us identify gravity or simply the ground.
This week let’s explore horizontal lines and see if they do indeed ground viewers and make more peaceful photographs.
Please create at least three different resolved compositions with clear and dominant horizontal lines. Discuss how they make you feel. Does the theory match our practice?
Post the three and comment on the other artworks in the posts on how they make you feel.
