welcome to spring

Clair and I are incredibly excited about spring this year as we so love getting out and photographing the flowers. I have been photographing them for weeks now.

This photograph is my favourite from last spring, and was taken at the Norman Lindsay Gallery at Faulconbridge. Have you ever been? It is a firm favourite of mine. I just love his etchings. They are just so incredible. I find them so inspiring. I will have to show you the work that they inspired.

After wandering the gallery and having a picnic with Mel in the gardens, we went for a wander around a short bushwalk on the grounds to find this beautiful sun orchid in full bloom.

It was an incredibly sunny day, so I sheltered this gorgeous little flower with my hat in one hand and photographed with the other.

This allows me to blow the background out, and get stunning soft light on the flower. As a treat, I thought I’d share it with you in colour. You don’t see my colour work so often do you. Well, neither do I. Laughs to himself.

As you can read, I am writing again. I tell you more as I get back into it again. It is always way too confronting until you start. Then once you start, it really isn’t that hard. Just like making artworks really. The joy and motivation comes from the doing. As they say, don’t wait for inspiration, find it in the doing.

Clair and I are running a couple of flower photography walks in the next few weeks. One in Sutherland, and the other in Blackheath. Southern Sydney (ex Sutherland) Tuesday 16th September 2025 and The Blue Mountains (ex Blackheath) Tuesday 30th September 2025. If you’d like to join us you can book a spot here. https://lenmetcalf.com/store/p/wild-flower-workshop

If you’d like to purchase a print of this image, in colour or in sepia (and yes it is just as beautiful), I am now offering you the chance to purchase any photograph of mine as a print, either on cotton rag paper, or as a print on glass. So if you ever see a photograph of mine you’d like printed, then please purchase one. I am offering them in a large variety of sizes and price points. https://lenmetcalf.com/buy-lens-photographic-prints
