Ron Evans is an American photographer from Little Rock in Arkansas who seeks out the remarkable amongst the ordinary. We are excited to feature his work in the next issue of Len’s Journal, volume 6 issue 1.

Ron shares his Sine nomine series with us in which he experiments with abstract photography. Talking about his craft, Ron says:

‘The American photographer Aaron Siskind, like me began making photographs in the social documentary tradition. Eventually he began shifting in the late 1940’s to making photographs that were abstract in nature after befriending some of the New York school of abstract expressionist painters, artists like Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Motherwell.

Among Siskind’s photographs were a series of road tar pictures, images of black tar painted over cracked and weathered asphalt. These photographs demonstrated his genius for abstracting common road surfaces, which came from his ongoing dialogue with abstract expressionist painters. Many of these photographs were unfamiliar, unrecognizable and completely open to visual interpretation by viewers. I met Aaron briefly in the 1980’s while at one of Houston’s Fotofest’s saying to him, “Your abstract work is stunning, even though I don’t always get it”. He responded by saying, “Sometimes I don’t get it either”. This same sentiment goes for my Sine nomine series, a small attempt to make a photograph I have never made before.’
