EX85 The Three Colour Rule
The three colour rule comes from film making theory and observation. Many films choose a primary colour for the entire film, then they use a secondary colour for support and harmony. The third colour is just a little accent.
This weeks exercise is really going to be a challenge. I did think about going with the two colour rule but we will do that next week as it may be a little harder than only have three.
The three colour rule is really the two colour rule, with addition of using a third colour somewhere to accent something.
So you task is to create photographs with a primary colour that occupies most of the photograph, about 60%, a secondary colour that supports and harmonises with the main colour. And lastly only includes a tiny small amount of accent colour.
So for example I might photograph a beach with all of the oranges of the sand, a towel that is yellow. that only takes up a smaller part of the photograph. Then I might put a green beach ball on the towel to work as the accent and as it is a complementary opposite it will gain a huge amount of attention in the photograph. There is no way that it would be hidden….
This is great fun, taking a theory from film making and bringing it over to photography.
Remember to have your secondary colour as an analogous colour rather than a complementary one.
The easiest way to complete this exercise is to build a set with objects, materials, clothing etc. Doing it in the landscape will be much harder. But I think you can if you try hard enough.
Primary colour
Secondary colour
Accent colour
Approximately in these proportions:
60% primary colour
30% secondary colour
10% accent colour
Please note… the primary colour isn’t necessarily the dominant colour. It is the colour that has the largest area on the image… You will figure out which colour or colours dominate the composition.
Primary does not refer to the primary colours… but to being the main colour..
Purple primary, pink secondary and yellow accent.
Yellow primary, green secondary and red accent
Green primary, purple secondary, and yellow accent

As I will be away next Friday, the zoom meeting will still be going ahead without me, so please join in and have a talk together and catch up... The goal is to talk about what you are learning from the exercises and to give each other encouragement by telling others what you like about their work... It would take too long to discuss all the work, so why not concentrate on the work of those that are at the meeting... here is the link to the meeting...
