EX98 Vantage Points
In simplest terms considering your vantage point for the camera is about choosing how high it is off the ground. Place your camera close to the ground, and close to a foreground interest and you end up with a sweeping feeling of depth. By holding your camera up high and tilting it down, you get a very different look of the ground sweeping underneath you.
Some visual psychologists would say that we ‘look up’ people we respect, and ‘look down’ on people we see as younger and less experienced. When we say we look at someone ‘eye to eye’ we consider the other person as being equal. This is something that can easily be illustrated with portraiture in photography.
In this exercise try photographing three different subjects and try each of the three vantage points described:
eye to eye
looking down on
looking up too
Post your three photographs as a triptych with each view of the same object side by side. Post them in our forum here.
