EX43 Blue and Red

Blue is the worlds favorite colour, well loved by most. Blue releases serotonin when we look at it or are immersed in blue light. It inspires creativity and calms. It is associated with openness, peace and security. (https://www.mhanational.org/blog/how-blue-light-affects-mental-health)

Red on the other hand yells of dominance, sexuality, and intensity. People surrounded by red find their heart beating a little faster and often report feeling a bit out of breath. (https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20140827-how-the-colour-red-warps-the-mind)

“The hypothalamus is a key part of the brain responsible for the secretion of a number of hormones which control many aspects of the body’s self-regulation, including temperature, sleep, hunger and circadian rhythms. Exposure to light in the morning, and blue/green light in particular, prompts the release of the hormone cortisol which stimulates and wakes us, and inhibits the release of melatonin. In the late evening as the amount of blue light in sunlight is reduced, melatonin is released into the bloodstream and we become drowsy.” (http://theconversation.com/does-colour-really-affect-our-mind-and-body-a-professor-of-colour-science-explains-84382)

Did you know the red team has more chances of winning than the blue team? (http://community.dur.ac.uk/red.advantage/index.html/wordpress/research/)

It does appear that the term ‘feeling blue’ is cultural, rather than physiological. (http://community.dur.ac.uk/red.advantage/index.html/wordpress/research/ )

Ok… that is a bit overwhelming if you read all of those links. A few of the things I thought I knew turned out to be incorrect.

So, we love blue and we love red… in various quantities / amounts it changes…

When small amounts are put close together an optical illusion creates purple.

What do these two colours mean to you? How do you react to them? Tell us in the comments bellow, when you post your photographs there.

Post at least one red photograph, one blue photograph and a couple of both red and blue together in a harmonious composition.
